Explosive growth of Intensive Poultry Units (IPUs): Since 2016, intensive farming has surged by 20%. Today, 96% of UK chicken broiler meat comes from IPUs housing hundreds of thousands of birds. There are 65 chickens for every person in Shropshire, placing huge ecological pressures on the Severn. For years, councils have been rubber-stamping applications for giant factory farms, allowing the significant expansion of Intensive Poultry Units (IPUs) in the Severn catchment area.
A dangerous hotspot for poultry waste: Shropshire, alongside Herefordshire, leads the UK in poultry intensification. Each day, over 1,000 tonnes of poultry waste flood the region, much of it polluting the River Severn.
Outdated pollution models: The Environment Agency is still relying on 2010 livestock data for phosphate modelling and 2014 figures for nitrates—ignoring a massive spike in poultry numbers over the last few years. For instance, between 2011 and 2017 there was a 27% increase in permit-holding poultry farms across the UK. These models therefore drastically underestimate the environmental impact.
Lack of supply chain accountability: Major food retailers remain unaccountable for their role in driving devastating pollution levels. It’s time for transparency and responsibility.
