Location: Home based, with some travel to London and across UK
Direct Report: Reports to Campaigns Manager
Background: Communications, social media, writing, photography, graphic design, digital systems
Remuneration: £25,000 – £33,000 with 5% employer’s pension and 25 days holiday
Start date: December 2022
Term: Full time (part-time may be considered), permanent position with 3 month probation period

  • The written submission should be a one-page post that could be published on social media about a river pollution campaign and call to action. It should combine concise and clear copy of no more than 300 words with engaging imagery and design in pdf format.
  • Initial interviews will be held by phone during the week of 12th December 2022 and second interviews will be in person soon afterwards.
  • Please note that applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and screening calls and first-round interviews may be conducted with short-listed candidates before the application deadline.
  • All shortlisted candidates will be contacted within two weeks of the closing date.

Main Role

The Communications Coordinator is responsible for planning and coordinating the communications of River Action’s campaigns, working closely with the Campaigns Manager to mobilise the voice of communities, inform the public and help advocate for change in national policy and industry practice. This will include specific responsibilities to support our campaigns: help the Campaigns Manager to develop the communications plan; write, design and produce high quality content; translate data and reports into engaging and accessible materials; communicate our key campaign messaging with consistency and clarity; promote campaigns to the public and target audiences across Britain; cultivate and develop our social media presence & support that of our partner organisations and monitor and report our communications performance.

The Communications Coordinator will report to the Campaigns Manager and will coordinate communications relationships with key influencers, advisers, the media and other partners, representing the organisation as required.

The Communications Coordinator will also work closely with River Action’s retained communications agency Seahorse Environmental, who provide strategic advice and public affairs consultancy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to developing and delivering the communications plan with the Campaigns Manager and communications team to help achieve River Action’s objectives on time and to budget.
  • Develop with the Campaigns Manager innovative communications including online campaigns, articles, briefings, web content, reports, petitions, brand boycotts and stunts.
  • Support the Campaigns Manager with researching and gathering content including data and images for communicating campaigns and related interventions.
  • Coordinate the delivery of communications projects according to the communications plan, in a timely and effective manner and on budget, keeping documents, systems and platforms up to date.
  • Write highly engaging, evidence-based and tactically astute content for public communications, political briefings, policy critiques and other formats to share our mission and impact.
  • Design communications materials using graphics software, and photography, adjusting format, style and medium for the relevant message and audience.
  • Post and coordinate social media streams across all platforms (River Action’s prime channels are Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin)
  • Actively cultivate River Action’s social media presence by growing the charity’s following across all platforms and supporting our many partner organisations with supportive posting
  • Maintain the website, commission blogs, podcasts and other communications, ensure they are inspiring, accurate and relevant.
  • Coordinate social media and community-based communications volunteers with support from the Campaigns Manager.
  • Recruit and coordinate relationships with key influencers, the media, partners and our alliance of collaborators to promote our work, key messaging and profile-raising.
  • Be instrumental in building the charity’s profile across Britain within the conservation sector, government, industry, communities and among the general public.
  • Contribute to the development of our position, brand and key messaging with colleagues and help keep these fresh and relevant.
  • Collaborate publicly on communications and public engagement initiatives with other NGOs to develop and cement strategic relationships, and increase cross-promotion across platforms.
  • Promote the River Action toolkit to support communities and activists including citizen science, legal advice, whistleblowing and communications.
  • Monitor and report communications performance and River Action impacts achieved through communications projects.
  • Visit sites, communities and campaign interventions to generate stories and images, interview people of interest and create live content.
  • Coordinate press releases and place content with media outlets, and coordinate advertising and related content generation in publications and online.
  • Work with the Campaigns Manager to develop a programme of high-impact public and targeted events e.g. webinars/panel discussions and in-person gatherings.
  • Contribute to fundraising efforts particularly crowdfunding in support of the Campaigns and fundraising teams and charity’s mission.
  • Help ensure all team members representing River Action are well-briefed and on-brand ahead of external engagement, and colleagues handle sensitive personal information and relationships according to organisational policies.
  • Support the Campaigns Manager in representing the charity’s communication work as required through the media, public-speaking and at events (online and in person).
  • Keep up to date with our relevant work across advocacy, policy and key relationships in order to inform communications.

The above overview contains the main duties and responsibilities for this position. However, in a small organisation such as River Action, staff members are expected to show flexibility in their approach to work and be willing to undertake other tasks that are reasonably allocated to them but which are not part of their regular job description. Where any task becomes a regular part of an employee’s responsibilities, the job description will be changed in consultation with the employee.
